Psychological assessments use psychometric and projective techniques to evaluate various aspects of child development. Often, they are required for educational placement, access to services, and special accommodations at school or university. Certain types of assessments are used for choosing the best therapeutic approach or making educational and career choices.

Gifted Assessment

Recommended ages: 6+

It is conducted to determine whether a child is functioning above the age expectation in their ability to reason logically and solve problems. This test assesses a child's abilities in the areas that are most predictive of academic success in formal educational settings. This assessment is often required for placement of students in special "gifted" programs within the public educational system, or in private schools offering a gifted curriculum.

Gifted Assessments

  • The child is academically advanced
  • Shows curiosity and interest in learning
  • Has advanced verbal skills
  • Is creative and out-of-the-box thinker

Psychoeducational Assessment

Recommended ages: 6+

A Psychoeducational assessment is conducted when a comprehensive review of a child's or adult's cognitive skills is required. This assessment evaluates whether a person has a Learning Disability or any other condition that affects their learning. If a diagnosis is established, the person can receive special accommodations and educational support at school or university.

  • Falls behind academically
  • When standard interventions don't help
  • Needs special accommodations

ADHD Assessment

Recommended ages: 6+

An ADHD assessment is a subtype of psychoeducational assessment with a special emphasis on evaluation of attentional skills, concentration, self-regulation, organization and impulse control. The purpose of this assessment is to formally establish or rule out a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and to determine its subtype.

ADHD Assessment

  • The person has difficulties focusing
  • Has difficulties engaging in activities that require mental effort
  • Easily destructible and disorganized
  • Acts impulsively

Cognitive Profile Assessment

Recommended ages: 6+

A Cognitive Profile assessment can be recommended for virtually every child or adolescent. Each person has a unique cognitive profile and there are learning strategies that work for some and don't work for others.

Cognitive Profile Assessment
Recommended When:
  • You want to understand a child's cognitive strengths and weaknesses
  • You want to customize your child's education
  • Select optimal career path at an early stage
  • Recommended for all children age 6-16

Social-Emotional Assessment

Recommended ages: 5+

A Social-emotional assessment is conducted in order to better understand a child's inner life by exploring their feelings, thoughts, coping mechanisms, and ideas about the self and the world. It is recommended when a child exhibits emotional, social, or behavioral issues, such as low self-esteem, anger, defiance, depression, anxiety, family and peer conflicts, etc. Information is gathered through a combination of formal and semi-formal techniques such as interviews, questionnaires, observations, projective tests, etc.

Recommended When:
  • The child appears anxious or sad
  • Has angry outbursts or tantrums
  • Is aggressive towards others
  • Experiences social difficulties
  • Has low self-esteem

Assessment For Autism Spectrum Disorders

Recommended ages: 5+

( HIGH FUNCTIONING AUTISM ONLY! ) These assessments will often include some measure of cognitive ability, language and processing skills, and academic achievement. As part of the assesment process, we will gather a detailed history of the child's development, and observe their interactions with different people. We also gather reports of their social skills and projective measures that illuminate their view of the world.

Recommended When:
  • The child has delays in social communications
  • Has narrow and rigid interests
  • Hypersensitive to smell, touch, light, or sound
  • Has difficulties engaging with peers

Career Assessment

Recommended ages: 16-25

A Career (or occupational) assessment is usually recommended for adolescents age 15 and up who are interested to learn more about their unique personal and cognitive qualities, and how these qualities map onto the spectrum of real-life jobs and professions. The assessment measures the student's aptitudes, interests, and personality traits along with a series of interviews and discussions that promote self-awareness and goal-setting. Such assessment is helpful for high-school students or for university students who are considering a change of direction.

  • Recommended for any adolescent or young adult
  • Prior to applying to college or university
